I have the honour to acknowledge receipt of your “very confidential” Note of 15 July (1) and to inform your Eminence that I have sent a copy of it to the Foreign Office with the diplomatic courier this evening.

I am sure that Lord Halifax will appreciate greatly the kind reply to his communication and above all the good will and frankness which your Eminence has shown in explaining the motives of the Holy See and to recapitulate the good-will action carried out so far in the interest of peace.
